I'm the featured artist of the week at Daily Paintworks

I am over the moon excited to announce that I am the feature artist of the week at Daily Paintworks. I am honoured to be selected given the number of talented artists that belong to the site. My interview and gallery will be featured on their site and there is a draw to win my painting Ned. Here is the link:http://dpwnews.blogspot.ca/2014/01/dpw-spotlight-interview-kandice-keith.html.

Black and Blue, 12 x 12 acrylic on raised canvas

One of my goals for 2014 was to try and paint dogs. Dogs were the primary subject matter of my childhood (next to smurfs) and probably still are when I'm playing around with my kids. For some reason I held off for a long time to try and paint one on canvas. I've been wresting this one for a while now - this is one of those that I can constantly touch up and I'm going to call it quits before I cross that thin line and overwork it. Plus, I'm happy with how she looks

Ned 24 x 12 Acrylic on raised canvas

Here is another owl that I did using the same composition. I love the different looks from each owl, and it's interesting to see how small differences in the background can influence the surrounding colours. Hope you enjoy,

Ted 24 x 12 acrylic on canvas

I have been playing around with differently looking owls using the same composition. I do this often when I find a photo I like. I find I learn so much from each painting, and it has really helped me grow as an artist. Plus is it so much fun exploring how each personality starts to come through

Robert 16 x 16 Acrylic on raised canvas

I painted this same reference photo last summer on a 6x6 painting and really liked the results. I thought it might be worthwhile exploring him in a larger size (and with a different colour background). I hope you like him

Buff 15 x 30 acrylic on canvas

I had a lot of fun painting this guy. He seems to have a sensitive look to him. I really enjoyed painting the dark fur against the contrasting body, and I love the loose brushstrokes in the background

Three Bigger Birds 36 x 18 Acrylic on raised canvas

I painted a smaller version of this one and was very happy with the results, so I thought it would be worth exploring what it would look like on a bigger canvas. I often like to paint the same reference photo as I find that no matter what the size of canvas, I still get stuck in the same places. By painting the same photo, I can practice and improve in those tricky spots, explore alternative colour combinations, and build confidence. Plus, sometimes it's just nice to visit an old friend,

ED 11x14 Acrylic on raised wood panel

I've had this guy part way finished, and hanging on my wall since the beginning of December (when I started to spot the return of the eagles around town). I love watching all of the eagles swoop around outside my home and listening to the sounds they make. They certainly help me get through the dark rainy days of winter here in BC. This week it was announced that we had double the eagles from last year, and I thought I'd celebrate by finishing this guy up (and have him completed before all the eagles disappear for another year). I was stuck on the background colour and thought I'd try green again as it seems to be working for me lately.

Jed 10 x 20 Acrylic on Canvas

It feels good to finally get some quality time in my studio after the holidays, and get back to work. I had been playing around with this guy and I finally finished him yesterday. I'm very happy with the results, and I hope you like him too. I just love his personality, and I went back to "an old friend", my tube of bright aqua, for the background.
